The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent safety warning after receiving reports of seven deaths and 736 serious injuries linked to certain Freestyle Libre glucose monitoring systems.
According to the FDA, the issue is not with the sensor itself but with over-the-counter adhesives, including Skin Tac, used by many patients to keep the sensor attached to their skin. These adhesive products may interfere with the device, cause chemical burns, or create sensor errors—potentially leading to dangerous mistreatment of blood glucose levels.
The manufacturer, Abbott, emphasized that their sensors are intended to be used only with the provided adhesive, and using unapproved adhesives could damage the device or cause severe skin reactions.
The FDA is continuing its investigation and urges users to:
- Stop using any third-party adhesive products with Freestyle Libre systems.
- Follow manufacturer instructions carefully.
- Contact a healthcare provider immediately if experiencing skin reactions, abnormal readings, or device malfunction.
This warning applies to the following products:
- Freestyle Libre
- Freestyle Libre 14-day
- Freestyle Libre 2
- Freestyle Libre 3 continuous glucose monitoring systems

Cơ quan Quản lý Thực phẩm và Dược phẩm Hoa Kỳ (FDA) vừa phát đi cảnh báo khẩn cấp sau khi ghi nhận 7 trường hợp tử vong và 736 ca chấn thương nghiêm trọng liên quan đến một số hệ thống đo đường huyết Freestyle Libre.
Theo FDA, vấn đề không nằm ở cảm biến mà nằm ở các loại keo dán ngoài thị trường – bao gồm sản phẩm Skin Tac – được nhiều người dùng để cố định cảm biến trên da. Những loại keo này có thể gây phản ứng hóa chất, bỏng da, hoặc làm cảm biến báo sai kết quả, dẫn đến việc điều chỉnh đường huyết sai cách và gây nguy hiểm.
Hãng Abbott cho biết các thiết bị Freestyle Libre chỉ được thiết kế để sử dụng keo dán đi kèm trong hộp, và việc dùng keo khác có thể khiến thiết bị hư hỏng hoặc gây phản ứng da nghiêm trọng.
FDA khuyến cáo người dùng nên:
- Ngưng sử dụng mọi loại keo không phải của hãng.
- Tuân thủ đúng hướng dẫn từ nhà sản xuất.
- Liên hệ bác sĩ ngay nếu gặp kích ứng da, kết quả đo bất thường, hoặc cảm biến hoạt động không ổn định.
